Still working...

Just a quick status update on 1.3.0:

  1. I've been working on integrating a better tree interface: titles can be edited inline, and now items don't have a fixed width
  2. I'm doing a massive code clean-up for this sprint so it's taking me a little longer than usual. With this I can probably reduce the code down substantially and improve performance
  3. Other than that you shouldn't notice anything drastic (other than you will no longer have to hit F2 to edit the title)
1.3.0 has not been released yet but I hope that I'll have a video out soon with my progress. This sprint is taking a little longer than usual, but thank you for your patience!

1.3 Roadmap

Well since launching Ume Outliner 1.2, I've had some time to think about where I want Ume Outliner to go. After digging around some forums about outlining and seeing how people use outliners, I've decided to change the roadmap for 1.3 (yup, I can do that).

Firstly, I'm currently in the process of changing the tree interface. This isn't a huge change but it will allow me to add column support in the future. The only noticeable difference to you will be that the editing area will be a lot more flexible.

Secondly, I will need to do some code cleanup. This will keep the application stable and allow me to add features easily.

Collapsible notes is another feature I would like to add to 1.3. Currently all notes are open by default which may not make sense at times. I'm going to add a means of toggling that.

And finally, styles. I have a working alpha that allows you to set heading styles for each level in the outliner. For example, level 1 items can have Arial black, and level 2 items can have Georgia orange.

And that's what I have in store for 1.3.

Release 1.2

Okay, so it's almost here - version 1.2! I've decided to throw in a couple extra goodies in the Preview Edition:
  • Export to HTML
  • Export to Text
  • Online Quick Search (Google only)
  • Find
  • Replace
  • Fixed a few bugs from 1.1 (hitting tab in the editor no longer jumps focus, and some bugs with indent/outdent has been fixed)
  • Updated the installer; if it finds a previously installed Ume Outliner, it will ask to uninstall it.
Yes, there is a Release Version as well, but I'm currently finishing up documentation. The Release Version currently has the above, and:
  • Online Quick Search (Google, Twitter, Freebase, Wikipedia)
  • Spell checking
  • Documentation
I'm debating on whether I will wait until 1.3 before sticking a price tag on the Release Version, but until then, the Preview Edition is still pretty good!

Update: Ume Outliner 1.2 has been released!

Contacting Ume and Release

For those of you trying to get in touch with me, there seemed to be a problem migrating my site URLs - this was causing my mail form to break.

You can now reach me with the same form. I've tested it and it's now working. Sorry about that!

I'm also trying to upgrade my development environment which is somewhat costly - I'm hoping this won't cause a delay but you should see a new release in a couple of weeks.

Update: I've upgraded my development environment so I'm back on track. I should have something out very soon!

1.2 Arriving in January

Happy new years! What better way to bring in the new year with another release of Ume Outliner.

I will be releasing a new version which fixes several editing, menu and toolbar issues. I have also decided to give everyone the "Export to text" feature. Find and replace is still work-in-progress so please use at your own discretion.

I'm currently running through all of the test cases and this sprint should be coming to a close very soon. Stay tuned!

Oh and by the way, you may have noticed that nifty Ume icon in my blog profile - this will be the new application icon. The file icon will be similar.

HTML Export Status

Just a quick note about exporting to HTML with Ume Outliner: yes, the next release will have an HTML export option.

The following should work out of the box within the Ume Outliner export plugin:
  • Font color
  • Font weight (bold)
  • Font style (italic)
  • Text decoration (underline, strike)
  • Font size
  • Font family (ie: Verdana, Arial, etc)
  • Hyperlinks
  • Lists (unordered and ordered lists)
Things like tables, images, subscript, superscript, and background colors are currently not supported in the HTML export at this time.

I may release export for the Preview Edition for a limited time only. Stay tuned.
